The ICA Turns 90 With a Show About Its Own History
90 YEARS opens Oct. 15 and revisits a defining exhibition from each decade, from 1941’s Modern Mexican Painters to Simone Leigh.
The Institute of Contemporary Art was founded in 1936 as a sister institution to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. For its 90th anniversary it’s looking back at itself: 90 YEARS, opening October 15, revisits a defining exhibition or initiative from each of the museum’s nine decades. It runs through March 7, 2027.
The list includes Modern Mexican Painters (1941), Andy Warhol’s 1966 survey with the Exploding Plastic Inevitable, the CURRENTS series from the 1980s and ’90s, Ellen Gallagher’s Watery Ecstatic (2001), Yayoi Kusama, and Simone Leigh’s 2022 Venice Biennale presentation.
“The ICA has always been an institution that looks forward,” director Nora Burnett Abrams said in the museum’s announcement.
