Rain in Boston doesn’t have to cancel anything. Here’s what works indoors, from a free afternoon to a full night out.
Daytime
- The Boston Public Library in Copley Square is free and open until 8 PM Monday to Thursday (5 PM Friday and Saturday, 11 to 5 on Sunday). Find a seat in Bates Hall and stay a while.
- The MFA is the big one, open until 10 PM on Thursdays and Fridays. On the third Thursday of the month it’s $5 after 5 PM.
- Harvard Art Museums are free every day but Monday, 10 to 5, in Harvard Square.
- The Gardner and the ICA are both free on Thursday nights from 5 to 9. All the details are on our free museum nights page.
At night
- A movie: the Brattle in Harvard Square shows classics, cult films and new indies. Showtimes are on our movies page.
- Comedy: there’s stand-up or improv almost every night. See what’s on in comedy.
- A show: concerts and theater are indoors by definition. Start with live music or theater.
- Trivia or karaoke: a bar, a team and a few hours. Here’s trivia and karaoke by night.
Hungry after? Our late-night food guide lists kitchens open past 11.
