Two free, family-friendly festivals on Saturday, October 17, on top of the Book Festival and the Head of the Charles:

Fall Festival at Christopher Columbus Park, noon–3:30

On the waterfront by the North End, the Friends of Christopher Columbus Park start with a costume parade at noon, then Big Joe the Storyteller at 12:30, balloon animals from 1 to 2:30 and a magician at 2. Add games, crafts, face painting and giant bubbles. Come in costume.

Nature in the City at Magazine Beach, 2–6 PM

Mass Audubon’s free festival at Magazine Beach Park in Cambridge, right by the regatta, has a guided bird walk, lantern making with artist Elena Li and a lantern parade at sunset, plus live music from Saklamara. There’s no parking because of Head of the Charles road closures: take the Red Line to Central Square, the Green Line to BU Central, or the 47 bus. Rain date is Sunday.
